"A Symbol is something
that stands for or suggests something else by reason of relationship,
association, convention, or accidental resemblance; esp: a visible sign
of something invisible. This is important to know because when
we
see a symbol we now know that there is a meaning behind what is
actually being shown since a symbol is a "visible sign of something
invisible." A related word, symbolism, is "the use of conventional or
traditional signs in the representation of divine beings and spirits."
This too, is important because many of these symbols also represent
gods and goddesses."
The
Continuum Encyclopaedia of Symbols - Udo Becker (p5)
"... at the same time,
however, the verb "symballein" (Greek) was used in manners of speech
that suggested a gathering together, a hiding or a veiling. The sign,
having become a symbol, therefore encoded or camouflaged the apparent
meaning of an expression or that which was represented: the uninitiated
observer could no longer understand the statement so encoded."
"A symbol is usually
recognized only
within some specific culture, religion, or discipline, but a few
hundred symbols are now recognized internationally."
What does scripture say?
Ephesians 5:11.
"And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but
rather reprove them."
Hosea 4:6
"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge"
John 8:32
"And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
2Corinthians 11:14
"And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of
light."
Deuteronomy 7: 25 -26.
"The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt
not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee,
lest thou be snared therein: for it is
an abomination to the LORD thy God. Neither shalt thou bring an
abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but
thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it
is a cursed thing."
Deuteronomy 18: 9 - 12
"When
thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou
shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. There
shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his
daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or
an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a
charmer,
or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and
because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from
before thee."
Deuteronomy 23: 14
"For
the LORD thy God walketh in the midst of thy camp, to deliver thee, and
to give up thine enemies before thee; therefore shall thy camp be holy:
that he see no unclean thing in thee, and turn away from thee."
Deuteronomy 23: 16-17
"They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations
provoked they him to anger. They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to
gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your
fathers feared not."
Jeremiah
10:2
"Thus
saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed
at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them."
Psalm
96:5
"For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the LORD made the
heavens."
Fairies

"A fairy is a
spirit (supernatural being) found in the
legends,
folklore, and
mythology of many
cultures. They are generally
humanoid in form, though of a higher, spiritual nature and so possessed
of
preternatural abilities. They are often depicted with wings and an
ethereal glow, lithe and beautiful. They are also regarded as aloof,
ephemeral, mercurial, puerile and whimsical, among other qualities that
place them outside of a human scope and have a tendency to make them
associated or confused with other
mythological creatures."

"Under
the general designation of fairies, and fays, these spirits of the
elements appear in the myth, fable, tradition, or poetry of all
nations, ancient and modern."

"A tiny imaginary being in human form, depicted as clever, mischievous,
and possessing magical powers."
Dwarfs
http://en.wikipedia.org/Wikipedia, the free

"A
dwarf (plural dwarfs or, more recently, dwarves --see under Tolkien
below) is a short humanoid creature in
Norse mythology,
fairy tales,
fantasy fiction and
role-playing games. Dwarves are much like
humans, but generally living underground or in
mountainous areas. Here they have heaped up countless
treasures of
gold,
silver, and
precious stones, and pass their time in fabricating costly
armor. They are famed
miners and smiths although, like humans, they specialize in any number
of trades. Generally shorter than humans, they are on average stockier
and hairier, usually sporting full
beards. Dwarfish smiths created some of the greatest and most powerful
items of power in Norse mythology, such as the magic ribbon which bound
the
Fenris
wolf."
"Dwarves
are also called little Hill-men (Swiss), Earth-men
(Härdmandle,
pl. Härdmändlene. - Swiss) and Kröpel
(German). Dwarves
were described as the height of a 3-year old human child (about 3 feet
tall), ugly and big-headed.
Nidavellir is the land of the dwarves in Norse mythology."
"Then
the gods set themselves in their high-seats and held counsel. They
remembered how the dwarfs had quickened in the mould of the earth like
maggots in flesh. The dwarfs had first been created and had quickened
in Ymer’s flesh, and were then maggots; but now, by the
decision
of the gods, they got the understanding and likeness of men, but still
had to dwell in the earth and in rocks."

"Troll:
A hideous, evil earth-demon of Teutonic mythology living in caves. The
troll can be a dwarf or a giant who also lives in the hills and under
bridges."
The
Continuum Encyclopedia of Symbols - Udo Becker (p89)
"Dwarfs
are small, old, often duck-footed, goose-footed or bird-footed,
sometimes visible, sometimes not, helpful or teasing mischievous human
like creatures of folk belief that can be interpreted as (among other
things) symbolic embodiments of useful but ultimately uncontrollable
natural forces as well as of experiences and actions of the
subconscious that are only vaguely, or not at all, understandable.
Aside from various skills that they possessed and the gift, attributed
to them, of being able to tell the future, dwarfs, were regarded as
excellent smiths who practised their trade under the ground. Many of
the attributes were characteristic of individual gods, give evidence of
dwarf's skills. They were also thought to be guardians of treasure."
"A troll is a
fearsome member of a
mythical anthropomorph race from
Scandinavian folklore. Their role ranges from fiendish giants
–
similar to the
ogres of English
fairy tales – to a devious, more human-like folk of the
wilderness, living underground in hills or mounds, inclined to thieving
and the abduction of humans which, in the case of infant abductees, was
substituted with a
changeling. They could also be known as hill-folk or mound-folk. In
Shetland and
Orkney tales, trolls are called
trowe."
"Nordic
literature, art and music from the
romantic era and onwards has adapted trolls in various manners
–
often in the form of an aboriginal race, endowed with oversized ears
and noses. From here, as well as from Scandinavian fairy tales such as
Three Billy Goats Gruff, trolls have achieved international
recognition, and in modern
fantasy literature and role-playing games, trolls are featured to the
extent of being
stock characters. Fantasy trolls, however, are highly stereotyped
versions of their Scandinavian predecessors."
"The meaning of the
word troll is uncertain. It might have had the originally meaning of
supernatural or magical with an overlay of malignant and perilous.
Another likely suggestion is that it means "someone who behaves
violently". In old Swedish law, trolleri was a particular kind of magic
intended to do harm. It should be noted that
North Germanic terms such as trolldom (witchcraft) and trolla/trylle
(perform magic tricks) does not imply any connection with the mythical
beings. Moreover, in the sources for
Norse mythology, troll can signify any uncanny being, including but not
restricted to the Norse giants (jötnar)."
Masonic

"Treasure Trolls come with a
"wishstone," a crystal inserted in the belly button. Crystals are
important to the New Age theology, as it is believed they possess a
life force influence that can be tapped for healing purposes. The belly
button is significant because it represents the umbilical connection,
or the centre of the life force."
"The gems on the treasure
troll doll
have an additional significance, one not lost on the imagination of
children. They are wishstones, talismans that can make their every
dream come true."

"What most people don't
realize is that the word Troll comes from the old Norse word for demon
and is defined by some sources as a "devil: a person of great
wickedness or maliciousness.""
